When hearing the word "punishment", most of us think of negative things and do not like the term at all. Surprisingly, some of the punishment techniques have been used widely but we just do not realize they are punishment techniques. Two of the most popular techniques are overcorrection and time-out.
Two types of overcorrection:
For example, the child throws the toys away. You make him pick it up and put it neatly where it was before. Then you require him to put up other toys neatly.
For example, the child runs toward the prefer toy. You take him back to the original place and make him walk to where the toy is at. He has to redo the behavior 5 times before he can gain access to the toy.
For example, the child is playing with his friends then he punches one of them. The teacher can remove him from the play area and make him sit at the other side of the room for 2 minutes. Because of his aggressive behavior toward other, he loses his play time.
But how can you use time-out effectively????

Two types of overcorrection:
- Restitutional overcorrection:
For example, the child throws the toys away. You make him pick it up and put it neatly where it was before. Then you require him to put up other toys neatly.
- Positive practice overcorrection:
For example, the child runs toward the prefer toy. You take him back to the original place and make him walk to where the toy is at. He has to redo the behavior 5 times before he can gain access to the toy.
- Time-out:
For example, the child is playing with his friends then he punches one of them. The teacher can remove him from the play area and make him sit at the other side of the room for 2 minutes. Because of his aggressive behavior toward other, he loses his play time.
But how can you use time-out effectively????
- You should reinforce time-in environment. For the child in the above example, whenever he plays nicely with his friends, you can praise him for his behavior.
- You have to carefully determine which behaviors leads to time-out.
- You should consider how long the child needs to be in time-out. It cannot be too short or too long.
- You should implement time-out consistently every time the problem behavior occurs.
- Ethical consideration for time-out:
- Putting a child into a restrictive and isolated place can be considered as unethical. However, a person can implement time-out if the program is supervised closely.
- The duration of time-out cannot be too long. It needs to be brief.
