Extinction
It is defined when you stop providing reinforcer for a previously reinforced behavior. As a result, that behavior is less likely to occur and it returns to a prereinforced state.
The most important thing to remember about extinction is extinction burst.
Extinction burst happens when you start implement an extinction procedure, the behavior of the child will increase tremendously before it stops.
For example, the child normally gets attention from the teacher by screaming. When the teacher stops reinforcing that behavior and ignores his scream. He continues screaming louder and louder. At some point, he realizes that screaming no longer gets the teacher's attention and then he stops screaming.
So remember, things often get worse before they can get better. I understand it is really difficult to stop what you have been doing before and to ignore the child. You always tend to concern what he is going through and will feel overwhelm with lots and lots of negative emotions. But do you want to see a smile on your child's face or do you want him to stuck in the same pattern as before? You choose !
